Where do I buy a helmet?  What should I know about helmets?

It’s been too long since I’ve driven something in anger. So, I’ve asked my wife for a helmet for Christmas for maximum wagon hoonage. Her response was, “OK, where the hell do I buy that?”

So Oppo, where the hell does one go to buy a helmet?

Also, what should I be looking for in a helmet? I’ve never owned one, and I don’t know anything about them. I’m looking for something I can use for autocross/rallycross. Also, I have a giant head, if that matters.

I’m in the Chicagoland area, if anybody knows an actual brick and mortar store when I can try them on.

You can order them through Summit or Jegs for example.

You can get a safe helmet brand new for maybe $60 or so. Until you’ve worn a full-facer for a while, you won’t really understand the difference between a cheap one and an expensive one.

Until you go for a full HANS system, there’s going to be almost zero difference in performance for any safety-rated helmet inside a car.

The 2015’s just went on sale, so if you want one that’ll be SCCA legal for 10 years get one of those. If you want one for much cheaper, but will only be good for 5 more years, get a 2010.

Some auto parts stores may sell helmets (Canadian Tire sells racing helmets). My recommendation would be to go with your wife to try some on, figure out sizes, see what fits, et cetera. I know Lanesplitter wrote a big thing on motorcycle helmets , which should give some advice that crosses over with racing helmets.

Northstar Motorsports in Barrington popped up in a Google search.

Those aren’t terribly cheap.

If you live in the Bay Area, there's a obscure Race Supply shop in the middle of nowhere in someone's house. Else, ask local mechanics. Did the trick for me.

is to get an open face helmet. Thank me later.

I do like the idea of open faced. Why do you recommend them?

^^^This. So many cheap SA2010s out there right now. Good for 5 more years.

Car helmets are a little more expensive than motorcycle ones, but they’re designed for different kinds of impacts, too. Some trackday and autocross groups are fine with M- or DOT-rated helmets meant for motorcycle use, but if you think you might do something like LeMons or another wheel-to-wheel series, spring for the SA-rated (meant for cars) one and you’ll have no issues with “does this helmet meet the technical regulations?”

Do go try things on! Different helmets fit different shaped heads. Most stores are happy to let you try on a few before you settle on one.

I would recommend going to a brick and mortar store to try them on. Fit is very important with helmets.

You might try a store that sells motorcycle gear, but I have no idea what the differences are between motorcycle helmets and racing helmets. Maybe someone can chime in on that.

Bell makes nice helmets for reasonable prices.

nano silver or equivalent antimicrobial liners are a huge plus, they make the helmet not stink, for awhile...

Not stinking is good. I am most definitely a sweater.

I will definitely be getting one for cars. I may go ahead and get a cheaper 2010 version. Logic being that I really don’t know what I want, and perhaps I will by the time 2020 rolls around. Then I can spring the cash for a 10 year helmet.

What are your thoughts on open versus closed face?

I believe the car ones are built for different types of impacts. Also there is a fire rating issue. I will be going to an actual store to try some on.

2. Personally, I just like having an open face helmet. It makes driving a bit easier for me.

Check out the Winners Circle in Joliet. The guys are pretty cool and the pricing is close to Jegs or Summit.
